Valentine's Day fun-nity

We're still figuring out Valentine's Day at our house. I like keeping it fairly simple, like a little book and candy for the kids (what my parents did), and that's it. Maybe some pink pancakes, maybe some pink milk at lunch, some pink cookie decorating, probably a dinner that is assumed to be "nicer" regardless if it actually is or not...some dessert...but that's it! Wait...that really doesn't sound that simple once I wrote it all down. But it is a regular day! No, we can't take a break from chores, and no, it's not like Christmas with cousin visits and parties. I like the days leading up to V-day best. A little decoration, a lot of card-making, and some heart crafts. Anticipation is more my thing I guess.

I really like the valentine exchange at school and all, but the meaning is really not there for my kids. At least not yet. I remember when I was a kid I would search through all my Little House on the Prairie valentines (or Smurfs? ET? Neverending Story?) to try to find the perfect saying to give that cute boy(s)/best friends and then finding just the right expressions on the candy hearts to go in those envelopes as well. Then I'd come home and analyze what cards I got from those boys/friends and what the secret message really meant.

The goods at our house. It was so nice to see the cards Isabelle and Anika made for everyone, donating their own candies (good ones too!) to give to all of us. Now that is sweet.
Olivia had her preschool Tuesday and she had a donut (see above) that she only ate the frosting from. She is proud of her donut and is saving it with the rest of her stash. I shudder to think what that donut would taste like right now. Ah...fun times.

Now bring on the Easter candy!

Happy Valentine's Day!

That's so funny! I have great memories of elementary school valentines. I think I got a Garbage Pail Kids valentine too!

that is hilarious that you'd evaluate the messages... I think I sometimes went so far as to avoid giving the sappy ones to anyone... Luckily H just signs them and sends them out - I don't think I could cope with the debate!

our kids got candy, pop-tarts for breakfast, and free reign over the pink milk today - but mostly because the gallon really needs to be used up!

All the valentines they made for g'ma and g'pa... still sitting in my scrapbook room... oops!

Valentines day is fun with kids.

I love the donut with the frosting licked off that is hilarious.

I too have felt a little sad that the kids don't get to write anything on the 'To' line of their Valentines. It does make it easier on the handout part, but life wasn't meant to be easy especially when you're dealing with love at the elementary school level.
But remember also how you would put Valentines in envelopes and you'd feel to see if it was bulky with candy before you just chucked it?

Oh, the SMURF'S! I loved that cartoon! You are funny! I did the exact same thing with my Valentine's as a kid... went through each one and made sure that boy or girl got the exact saying that I wanted them to have! I'm kinda glad my kids don't quite do that yet...it will happen soon enough! Your a good and fun Mom to color your food for this special day. I haven't ever done that yet.

I always thought it was more fun to get personalized valentines too though I understand why those Kindergarten and first grade teachers are wanting to avoid everyone getting a Valentine with the wrong name on it.

I like that book idea. Kate will want to hear all about "Chrissa".

To think that I probably had all these secret love messages in my elementary school valentines and I just shoved those candy hearts in my mouth!
I Remember making and decorating Valentine's boxes with mail slots--that was one of the first lessons I had that I was not as crafty as my peers.
Oh well, yeah for treats and pink pancakes.
