Have I gone too far in my teachings?

This is the Friend. You know- the LDS kid's mag. Anika (7 1/2) came up to me last week, asking me a question about this particular game. The idea is to put a smiley or frowney face on each picture, depending on whether the kids in them were doing good/happy things or naughty/sad things. So Anika was stumped on the picture of the kids sharing an ice cream cone in the lower left corner. She asked me "is it a happy face because they are eating ice cream or is it a frowny because they are sharing each other's ice cream and getting germs?" I laughed inside but secretly felt proud that she knew sharing licks with friends is a big no-no in our home. I've been doing a good job in my germ awareness teachings! But I also felt a little sad that the editors at Friend magazine are not germ-correct. I mean, really- this is 2009! With herpes and swine flu and scabies and mrsa who dares swap spit with buddies anymore??

Yes definetley a frowny face for me! Sharing is NOT caring when it comes to germs.

It helps to build their immune systems! They haven't gone through puberty yet, so they don't have cooties.

That is so funny! totally agree that should be a frowny face. we don't share in that way.

I've been dying for you to ask me if you've gone too far in your teachings. HE#@ yeah! You make all the other mommies at the park feel bad that they didn't bring fruity antibacterial soap for the second their kids step off the wood chips.

But as for sharing ice cream cones....just hoping it's a lack of imagination on the illustrators part. Sharing can easily be done with individually wrapped candies and thus no germs. But much more difficult to draw.

Careful or she'll become like the guy in "What About Bob?" Hahaa

That's cute! Very funny! And I totally agree that spit swapping is not a cool idea!

Hey, maybe they didn't "share". Maybe they traded because they didn't like the flavor they were given and now they are happy because they traded flavors! definitely a happy face! Yeah...I think that's what they were going for.

yeah. Let's start with the no shaking hands policy at church.

Maybe they should have had a conversation bubble above the picture that said... Oh did you want this flavor, Sure you can have it because I really wanted you're flavor and since we haven't licked ours yet it's okay to swap!
There you could confidently put a smiley face....assuming their hands are clean?!

LOL! That is the funniest post I've read in a long time! :) We are big time germ fanatics at my house too and especially now with Matt working at the hospital. In fact, the other day when Matt got home from work, Ella was running full speed ahead to give him a great big bear hug, but stopped dead in her tracks when she reached him and said... "ooh wait. I think I'll hug you later when you're not wearing your work clothes!" ha ha! He takes care of patients all the time who have MRSA, so it really freaks me out that he's going to get sick or bring home those germs! Love this post!

You get your Friend mag a lot earlier than we do---but we did that activity for FHE this week and Dallin had the same problem! How funny...

Hmm. My comment disappeared. I can't bring myself to imitate it. It's good to know about germs and it's good to celebrate a good marriage. Hooray for you.
